Created in the 1970s, this Rolex watch is the work of Jacques Lenfant, one of the most innovative goldsmiths of his generation. With him, jewellery entered the world of kinetic art. Inspired by Vasarely, Lenfant blurs optical sensations by contrasting the work in gold with trompe l’œil undulations that were baptised Tournesol. The dial and bracelet are all inlaid, alternating matt and shine, pure pressed wire and diamond surfaced relief. The workmanship like that of a weaver can be seen on both the front and back of each oval plate, which is entirely enamelled. The pattern is drawn in hypnotic waves in counter-relief, seamlessly joined from one link to the next, with no visible hinges. The effect is completely unprecedented, luminous and vibrant.
