Bold and sculptural 18K yellow gold “Ram” horn bangle with carved horns
This 1970’s Ram’s head cuff bracelet from Van Cleef & Arpels has the presence of a trophy and the precision of a goldsmith. The goat’s head in 18 carat yellow gold is chiselled with a rare attention to anatomical detail; its muzzle is polished, its horns are carved in tight spirals and its gaze is piercing. The horns themselves, in deep, nuanced brown, give the cuff an almost heraldic symmetry.
Here the horns are carved in ebony, a bold choice in the world of fine jewellery, giving the animalistic piece a singular organic presence and a heftiness that gold alone could not convey.
It is as much jewellery as sculpture and the wrist that bears it serves as a pedestal.
